It never dawned on me that not only were our internment camps surrounded by barb wire, but they were also manned by armed guards that actually shot and killed those trying to escape. As tonight's episode showed, the level of sacrifice was just tremendous back then, some of it stretched my imagination... the Bataan death march, bleeding almost to death in the ball turret under the B17 tossing out frozen globs of blood, learning to sleep while marching, etc. Just incredible stuff. I had read the history of WWII, but never on such a personal level.
Edit: I was curious who that unnamed inept general in tonight's program was that Patton replaced in north Africa, so I looked it up. What a loser. The external link was very informative, good read. |
